Machine Shop Manager

Oldbury

Overview:

We are recruiting for an experienced Machine Shop Manager to work for our client at their facility in Oldbury, this is an exciting opportunity reporting to the Operation Director, and will be involved in the development and implementation of new and improved manufacturing process, procedures and equipment. 

The role will be ensuring that the design specification of equipment, tooling, fixtures etc meet the company’s requirements and objectives.  Involved in promoting and support a LEAN culture, its methods and activities. You will be required to build, train, and manage a Team of Operatives and Engineers to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to satisfy all production requirements to fulfil customer orders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, co-ordinate, lead and participate in various multi-disciplined teams in addressing and fulfilling Company objectives associated with the Machine Shop
  • Plan the daily production and issue instruction to the shop floor team.
  • Develop Production routes to be most efficient.
  • Control cost and stocks of required tooling.
  • Cost, quote, produce route design and tool jobs
  • Responsible for volume outputs, scrap/rework, quality, safety and delivery commitments
  • Run trials for new products
  • Ensure that equipment and machinery are kept in good running order
  • Recommend new equipment when and where necessary
  • Develops the Machine Shop team through motivation, counselling, engineering skills and knowledge development, holding performance development reviews as well as setting timely and meaningful bonus schedules.
  • Regularly monitor and communicate the Machine Shop performance to the team by establishing effective communication methods.
  • Use all Machine Shop machinery/equipment proficiently and instruct others how to do so
  • Liaise with other Departmental Managers to ensure that all client deadlines are met in a timely manner
  • Champion continuous improvement programs within the department
  • Work independently and interdependently within various inter-departmental teams
  • Plan, co-ordinate and develop prototype builds and budgets to meet program timetables
  • Plan and lead the launch of new programs, new equipment and retro fits
  • Follow the training you received when using any work items given to you
  • Take reasonable care of your own and other people’s health and safety
  • Co-operate with your employer on health and safety
  • Tell someone (supervisor, or health and safety representative) if you think the work or inadequate precautions are putting anyone’s health and safety at serious risk
  • Support the company with environmental initiatives and any compliance issues

Experienced Required:   

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs including English and Mathematics together with an HNC in Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience of working as an Engineer in a Machining facility, preferably steel orientated. 
  • Experience of XYZ machines would be an advantage.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Consistent solid business ethics and integrity
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Expert in the use of CNCs, Lathes, Grinders and Millers
  • CNC programming essential in FANUC controls
  • The ability to read drawings successfully (CAD/CAM)
  • The ability to diagnose faults in tooling
  • Strong understanding of customer and market dynamics and requirements
  • Supply Chain/Procurement understanding
  • The ability to work on their own initiative
  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • The ability to work with personnel from all levels
  • Tact and the ability to deal with difficult situations and difficult individuals
  • Numerical skills
  • IT skills
