Learning Mentor - School in Oldham

Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Learning Mentor to join our team at a school in Oldham. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting students with their social, emotional, and academic development. Working closely with teaching staff, parents, and external agencies, you will help students overcome barriers to learning, improve their behavior, and develop strategies for success in school life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Support: Work on a one-to-one or small group basis with students to provide personalized mentoring and academic support, promoting positive attitudes toward learning.
  • Pastoral Care: Provide emotional and behavioral support to students, identifying any social or emotional challenges and helping students develop coping strategies.
  • Behavior Management: Assist with behavior improvement plans, working to reduce incidents of poor behavior and supporting positive behavior management strategies.
  • Monitoring Progress: Track the progress of mentored students, regularly reporting to the SENCO, class teachers, and senior leadership team.
  • Targeted Intervention: Identify students in need of additional support and implement intervention programs to help them engage fully in school life.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and external agencies to provide comprehensive support to students and contribute to individualized education plans (IEPs) where necessary.
  • Attendance and Engagement: Assist with strategies to improve student attendance and engagement, working with attendance officers and school leadership to encourage regular attendance and positive attitudes toward school.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a similar role, working with children and young people in a school or educational setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Understanding of the barriers to learning that students may face, including behavioral, emotional, and social challenges.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a wider pastoral and academic team.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Qualifications:

  • A relevant qualification in child development, social work, counseling, or education is desirable.
  • Experience working in an educational setting is highly advantageous.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policies is essential, and a willingness to undergo safeguarding training is required.
