Reed Engineering are working with a department of the University of Oxford and I am seeking a skilled Workshop Technician to join the team. This role is crucial in providing design, build, modification, and repair services for academic staff within the department's workshop facilities. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Workshop Manager, engaging with various materials and techniques to support teaching and research activities.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Manage machining processes, maintain quality control, and ensure the smooth operation of the workshop.
  • Process jobs, monitor outcomes, spot discrepancies, propose refinements, and rerun processes where necessary.
  • Test and fault-find equipment within the department, except those under maintenance contracts.
  • Construct equipment from verbal instructions, rough sketches, and plans using materials such as metals, woods, ceramics, and plastics.
  • Design and construct specialist department fittings.
  • Maintain equipment, perform quality checks, and contribute to the cleanliness and upkeep of the workshop space.
  • Assist with inductions, training of colleagues or students, and supervise non-workshop staff, emphasizing safety rules.
  • Operate and program CNC milling machines and CNC lathes.
  • Use CAD/CAM systems for designing and manufacturing components.
  • Keep up to date with, and advise on, health and safety regulations relevant to the workshop environment.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a workshop environment with various machinery including precision instruments, lathes, milling machines, electric saws, drills, and welding equipment.
  • A-level or equivalent qualification in engineering.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to find appropriate solutions to machine job issues.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficient IT skills, including knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to use computer-aided design and manufacturing software.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations in a workshop environment.
  • Ability to organise own workload and take initiative as appropriate.

Desirable:

  • Experience using SolidWorks and SolidCAM.
  • Knowledge of Protrax or Siemens control systems.
