Merco Medical Staffing are working closely with our Client in Oxford who need Pharmacists to join their team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The workday is 9 hours, with a 30-minute lunch break and 45 minutes for coffee (split into 30 minutes during the morning session and 15 minutes in the afternoon session). The morning session runs from 08:30 to 13:00, and the afternoon session from 13:30 to 17:30.
  • A typical day, when all pharmacists are present, will be structured as follows:

Morning Session:

    • The first two hours are dedicated to handling repeat prescription requests that the admin team could not process due to alerts or expired authorizations. The remainder of the session involves routine appointments, such as pre-booked medication reviews, or reviewing blood test results. Pharmacists will be responsible for ordering and monitoring blood tests (e.g., DOAC/DMARD monitoring or diabetes reviews) depending on their training.

Afternoon Session:

    • Routine appointments will continue, including pre-booked medication reviews. Depending on the pharmacist's experience and skill set, some sessions may focus solely on chronic disease reviews, such as diabetes management. One pharmacist will be allocated an entire session to work on the triage list (subject to training), handling urgent tasks and quick wins, and scheduling routine appointments as needed (e.g., for medication reviews that cannot be completed remotely).
  • One session per week will be reserved for contract-related work, with additional admin sessions allocated for audits.
  • If trained in minor illness, pharmacists may be assigned sessions to manage acute cases, seeing or calling patients with urgent medical needs. These sessions will be supervised by the emergency practitioner leading the session.
  • There will also be occasional meetings with the prescribing lead to address practice prescribing issues, with the schedule agreed upon in advance.

As part of the multidisciplinary team, the pharmacist will:

  • Assist patients with medication-related problems and queries.
  • Provide support to general practice staff regarding repeat prescriptions and medication inquiries.
  • Collaborate with the prescribing team to ensure the safety and quality of practice prescribing.
  • Perform medicines reconciliation, including managing new medication requests (e.g., from discharge summaries or outpatient letters) and reviewing repeat medications for newly registered patients.
  • Support training initiatives, such as independent prescribing, if not already qualified.
  • Have opportunities to develop skills in specific areas of interest, such as respiratory care, diabetes, or minor illness.
  • Conduct structured medication reviews for all patient groups.
  • Participate in clinical audits to enhance patient care and safety.
  • Contribute to contract-related work, helping the practice achieve targets for QOF, IIF, and the prescribing incentive scheme.
  • Assist with the diagnosis, management, and review of chronic diseases (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, CKD, hypercholesterolaemia), subject to experience and training.
  • Work assigned to the pharmacy team is managed through a dedicated triage list. Pharmacists are provided with protected sessions to review this list, giving them the autonomy to control which patients are scheduled for routine appointments and ensuring they have adequate time to address urgent tasks.

Qualifications and Experience required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy & registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Proven experience in a community or hospital pharmacy setting.
