This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the way this organisation uses software development and how the software team develops and changes for years to come.Your new role As the Head of Software, you will lead a large central software engineering team encompassing a wide diversity of roles, activities, platforms, and technologies. The role will also be responsible for the dissemination of high-quality software engineering processes across the organisation as well as the implementation and maintenance of the tools and applications across the organisation.Responsibilities could include

  • Provide strategic leadership for the software engineering team.
  • Work with stakeholders at all levels to anticipate needs, provide strategic advice, and deliver the most effective software programmes.
  • Lead and manage the software team, offering development plans, and motivating team members.
  • Transform the organisations activities through modern software, data, and simulation solutions.
  • Work across the organisation to highlight and provide guidance on best practices for software development.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Proficient in coding languages such as C++, Python, Fortran and Java
  • Holds a PhD or M.Sc. in STEM, comfortable managing academics and researchers
  • Significant people management experience in varied teams and the ability to define and establish new abilities and develop others as leader
  • Substantial experience in software engineering in an R&D environment, including responsibility for managing software team(s)
  • Extensive experience with software tools, including version control, editors, DevOps and planning.
  • Excellent understanding of modern software engineering practices
  • Broad familiarity with a wide range of software and data technologies and approaches
  • Ability to establish and work in an Agile/SCRUM environment
  • Ability to communicate, build trust, and influence at all levels
