Job Description:

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and proactive Special Needs Assistant to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other related special educational needs within a school setting in Oxfordshire. You will be working closely with teaching staff, SENCo, and other professionals to provide tailored support that enhances learning, development, and emotional well-being for students with ASD.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 or small group support to children with ASD/Autism, helping them access the curriculum and achieve their learning goals.
  • Use a variety of teaching techniques, including positive body language, good communication, and structured routines to support children's learning and development.
  • Assist with the social, emotional, and behavioural development of children, ensuring a safe and comfortable learning environment.
  • Support students during transitions between activities and throughout the school day, ensuring consistency and stability.
  • Maintain regular communication with teachers, parents, and the wider team to monitor progress and adapt support strategies as needed.
  • Provide assistance with personal care, where required.
  • Assist in managing challenging behaviour using de-escalation techniques, always promoting a positive and supportive environment.
  • Attend all staff meetings


Key Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience working with children with ASD/Autism or other related special educational needs, preferably within a school or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of effective strategies and interventions for supporting children with ASD, including sensory needs and communication difficulties.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Patience, empathy, and a calm demeanour when working with challenging behaviours.
  • Ability to work as part of a team but also independently with initiative.
  • Basic understanding of safeguarding and child protection protocols.
  • Relevant qualifications in Special Educational Needs (SEN) are desirable but not essential.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or willingness to work towards).
  • Training in Autism or SEN is highly desireable but not mandatory.
