Job Title: Structural Engineer (Highways)
Location: Penrith, Cumbria
Contract Duration: Minimum 6 months
Pay Rate: 400 per day (Inside IR35)
Job Purpose:
The Structural Engineer will provide expert engineering support on a highways project including the design, assessment and analysis of highway structures such as bridges and culverts. This role requires a minimum 6-month commitment to ensure high-quality, safe and efficient execution of all engineering tasks in line with project specifications and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, analysis and assessment of highway structures (e.g. bridges, culverts, embankments).
- Conduct site inspections to assess the condition and integrity of existing structures.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely delivery of engineering solutions.
- Prepare technical reports, drawings and documentation.
- Provide advice and technical support to junior engineers and contractors.
- Liaise with stakeholders including local authorities and contractors.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations.
- Contribute to the risk assessment and health and safety planning.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
- Chartered or working towards chartered status (e.g. ICE, IStructE).
- Minimum 3-5 years' experience in structural engineering, particularly within highways projects.
- Proficient in structural design software (e.g. AutoCAD, Tekla etc.).
- Strong knowledge of relevant design standards (e.g. Eurocodes, Highways England standards).
- Ability to perform structural analysis and design with attention to detail.
- Experience in site inspections and managing structural assessments.
- Full UK driving licence (required for site visits).
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience working with Tier 1 contractors.
- Experience leading or managing small teams of engineers.
- Familiarity with temporary works associated with highways projects.
