Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead Role Overview

As the Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Lead, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) SHEA Manager, ensuring that strategic priorities related to health, safety, and wellbeing are successfully implemented across both pre-construction and construction activities. You will guide delivery teams in adopting best practices, ensuring compliance with the Health, Safety, and Environment Management System (HSEMS), and proactively addressing risks. You'll also conduct inspections, audits, and incident investigations, ensuring all safety measures meet SPA standards, while promoting a safety-first culture across the organisation.

In addition to leading on HSW, you will mentor HSW advisors, drive team collaboration, and provide key support in training and development. This role requires strong analytical and interpersonal skills to ensure the organisation consistently meets its health and safety objectives and fosters a workplace where wellbeing is prioritised at every level.

Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead Key Responsibilities

  • Support the SPA SHEA Manager in delivering health, safety, and wellbeing strategies across pre-construction and construction projects.
  • Provide expert guidance to delivery teams, ensuring adherence to the Health, Safety, Environment Management System (HSEMS).
  • Conduct Targeted Verification Inspections (TVIs) and Construction Safety Inspection Reports (CSIRs), and lead HSW advisory visits.
  • Lead and support investigations into incidents, ensuring accurate reporting and effective resolution of HSW concerns.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive HSW training programmes, and ensure team members are well-equipped with up-to-date health and safety knowledge.
  • Oversee, mentor, and support HSW advisors, ensuring high standards in inspections, audits, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with other teams, including the environmental team, to enhance overall safety standards and share best practices.
  • Monitor health and safety risks, develop appropriate mitigation strategies, and escalate critical concerns when necessary.
  • Review and contribute to the development of essential safety documents, such as Construction Phase Plans (CPP) and Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Promote a positive culture of safety and wellbeing across the organisation, encouraging proactive engagement with all safety initiatives.

Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead Requirements:

  • Significant experience in health, safety, and wellbeing within both pre-construction and construction environments.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate and actively working towards, or in possession of, IOSH membership (CertIOSH/CMIOSH).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a forward-thinking approach to implementing digital solutions to improve safety performance.
  • Proven experience in leading and mentoring teams, with the ability to provide clear direction and support.
  • Strong background in incident investigation, report writing, and safety documentation development (e.g., CPP, RAMS).
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, capable of influencing stakeholders at all levels.
