My Client is recruiting for a Regional Discipline Lead - Mechanical in the Water Sector

Our Client is looking to strengthen their Engineering Leadership team with a Mechanical Regional Discipline Lead.
As an instrumental member of the Engineering Leadership Team you will report directly to the Engineering Director and adopt the role of lead technical authority for mechanical engineering aspects of the project.
As Mechanical Regional Discipline Lead you will therefore provide engineering technical direction to the mechanical discipline engineers and ensure an effective team is maintained to integrate all mechanical design elements across all zones & phases of the scheme and ensure right first-time functionality through design, construction, commissioning and takeover.


You will be responsible for the checking and reviewing of mechanical deliverables produced by other mechanical engineers and the supply chain to ensure that processes and procedures are followed. You will be required to coach and mentor junior and less experienced members of the mechanical engineering team. You will collaborate with key stakeholders and assist the multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure the project solution is providing best value for business through being fit for purpose and completed on time, to budget, and to the correct quality. You'll also collaborate with other stakeholders throughout the business to drive continuous developments in engineering, design, and innovation.


Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the mechanical design team to develop industry leading engineering design and solutions.
  • Be a key member of the Engineering Leadership team (ELT) reporting directly to the Engineering Director.
  • Work collaboratively alongside other ELT members and with the Project Management Team, Design Managers, Design Leads, Design Team Members, Construction Team and all key stakeholders to deliver best value solutions.
  • Develop new ways of working to reduce carbon, increase biodiversity, address climate change, and embrace innovations and new digital technologies.
  • Grow your professional internal and external networks with a multitude of partners.
  • Assist in appointment of specialist contractors and management of the specialist contractors design team contracts to cost, time, quality & safety requirements.
  • Assist in the creation of the project design management plan and ensure all members of the design team are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Manage the production and co-ordination of the mechanical design programme and design deliverables schedule throughout the project.
  • Ensure by working with the project planner, that all mechanical design deliverables are integrated within the construction programme.
  • Manage the delivery of the mechanical design in accordance with the design management plan and design brief, including client requirements, cost, programme, best practice design standards, design responsibilities, BIM strategy and contract agreement.
  • Ensure clear record keeping and monitoring of the mechanical design process/programme/deliverables.
  • Ensure the mechanical design complies with Client brief, contract, current legislation, Development Consent Order, building regulations, CDM and relevant technical requirements.
  • Lead buildability, risk, opportunity and value engineering reviews
  • Ensure BIM Execution Plan & CAD protocol are maintained.
  • Ensure contractors proposals are compliant with employer's requirements.
  • Monitor and report on mechanical design progress on a weekly and monthly basis, including taking action to maintain design delivery to time, cost, drive efficiencies, quality and safety requirements.
  • Deliver leading edge collaborative design by ensuring your team are synchronised and aligned in their processes and approaches to deliver the highest standards safely and consistently.
  • Oversee the Technical deliverables for the mechanical discipline ensuring they are produced within the required timescales, technical costs are properly managed and Technical change is tightly controlled.


About The Candidate


Experience and Qualifications:

  • An engineering, or equivalent, degree or be able to demonstrate a degree level of knowledge through relevant experience.
  • Preferably chartered, or working towards, chartered status.
  • Demonstrate a level of competence in practical mechanical engineering in the water / wastewater industry environment.
  • Experience of mentoring and coaching of junior engineers.
  • Experience of designing multi-disciplinary water industry capital projects, from solution to detailed design.
  • Proven ability to manage designer's responsibilities under CDM.
  • Experience of Wastewater and Sludge Treatment Centres.
  • Developing a collaborative team culture, as well as working effectively within a multidiscipline and diverse team.
  • Building partnering relationships and undertaking stakeholder management.
  • Managing high performance teams.
  • Organised - able to organise own and teams' workload, with an ability to proactively plan.
  • Leading and developing a team - ability to provide leadership in a dynamic and innovative environment, with changing requirements and competing tensions, and able to provide guidance on priorities and empower others to make decisions.
  • Undertake line management and staff welfare. Assess competencies, support performance management and undertake mentoring and development of staff.
  • Comfortable in presenting to, influencing and negotiating with a wide range of teams, stakeholders, and customers.
