In order to deliver the MoD’s submarine and warship support requirements, a significant programme of infrastructure investment is required at Devonport. The ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ (MIP) Business Unit was established to deliver this.

A key part of MIP’s workload is the development of defuel capability for out-of-service submarines. This work comprises a number of interrelated multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects at the Submarine Refit Complex (SRC). The 14 Dock Readiness project is therefore delivering upgrades to an existing dry dock that will be used for the submarine defuels. The SRC and dry dock are within a nuclear licensed site.

This post is for part of the team delivering updates to existing design substantiation dating back many years, as well as drawing together substantiation for the new infrastructure.

The primary purpose of the role is to support the Design and Project Managers in the delivery of project scope. Duties will involve the following:
• Provision of delivery of Design Substantiation Reports (DSR) updates through the application of process, domain knowledge and experience.
• Carry out analysis of existing concrete structures to ensure that they continue to meet specified safety functional requirements.
• Provide Subject Matter Expert advice on civil/structural engineering matters.
• Liaise as necessary with other design teams and the project’s nuclear safety team.
• Ensuring effective Quality Management, delivering through compliance with Babcock’s Business Management System and Technical Manual.
• Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records maintained and configuration and quality controls applied.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate:
• Understanding of multi-disciplinary engineering activities through design, implementation and operation and with a core focus on safety.
• Good understanding of modern analysis techniques for concrete nuclear structures, ideally using finite element analysis.
• Understanding of the UK laws and regulations pertaining to Nuclear Licenced Sites.
• Clear understanding of how nuclear safety cases are developed and the role of the designer in this process.
• Working knowledge of the international codes and standards pertinent to the design of nuclear structures.
• Knowledge of construction criteria necessary for nuclear facilities.
• Strong technical authorship skills, ideally relating to the development and presentation of design substantiation.
• Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements
• Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications.
