As the Senior EHS Engineer, you will play an integral part in developing the safety strategy and ensuring that the Plymouth site complies with all relevant Health, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability legislation, as it effects the business as well as driving the achievement of functional business targets and goals.
This includes, but is not limited to, legal and regulatory compliance, process safety management, Excellence safety component, occupational health, adherence to corporate standards, training and awareness, provision of First Aid, auditing and being audited, and incident investigation.The Senior EHS Engineer will lead a small safety team, develop effective site relationships, provide SME input and promote a positive safety culture across the Plymouth site.
Main responsibilities:
- Work closely with management to develop and enforce health and safety policies.
- Create a safety vision for the plant and support the development of a safety strategy that achieves Corporate and business objectives. Coordinate resources and execute activities aligned with the overall Plant safety strategy.
- Lead a small team focused primarily on Health & Safety. Establish and set clear objectives, provide direction, support, and motivation to team members to achieve their goals. Monitor performance and provide timely feedback.
- Plan, design, and implement new or modified initiates to improve the safety culture of the Plymouth plant.
- Develop team and personal skills, identify training needs and provide coaching, develop and deliver safety training programs for employees.
- Assess safety procedures in various work environments including the management of contractors to ensure they meet industry and corporate standards.
- Create, promote and drive the use of leading safety performance indicators. Use data to identify areas of concern and be skilled in influencing opportunities for improvement.
- Design and implement safety systems and processes to minimise the risk of job-related injuries with a mindset of achieving a zero harm goal.
- Conduct safety inspections and audits to ensure compliance with standards.
- Support any investigations of accidents and incidents to identify the causes and find ways to prevent them in the future.
- Report unsafe occurrences and incidents internally and to other notifiable bodies when required.
- Recommend safety features and protective equipment to be installed or implemented in equipment and facilities.
- Stay updated on current best practices, strategies, and legislation relating to workplace safety.
- Support the provision of requested information for any Employers Liability or Public Liability claims.
- Support the preparation of risk assessments ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of associates is not compromised.
- Participate in Manufacturing Unit meetings, provide functional data, input and advice.
- Analyse Environmental & Safety Opportunities (ESO) and incident data. Identify areas of concern.
- Prepare and maintain safety procedures with regards to manufacturing equipment, chemical handling, workplace transport, manual handling and contractor management.
- Assist with the introduction of new machinery, processes, and equipment by identifying and mitigating hazards to ensure the continued safety of associates.
Experience & Qualifications
- Achieved a BSc or BEng in a Health & Safety discipline.
- Obtained a NEBOSH, IOSH or NVQ H&S qualification or equivalent experience is essential.
- EHS experience within a diverse high volume manufacturing organization.
- Thorough understanding of legal compliance.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing equipment and their ancillary items, the installation and subsequent evaluation for hazards and risks of this equipment.
- Ideally a trained Auditor
- Ideally hold a recognised Engineering or Project Management qualification.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage a team and comfortable with making tough decisions.
- Strong IT skills with the ability to learn new software.
- Adept influencing skills with ability to providing clear objectives, direction and guidance.
