Job Opportunity: Education, Health, and Care Assistant (ECHA)

We are working with a local SEN school in Plymouth to recruit for an Education, Health, and Care Assistant (ECHA) role.

The school supports pupils with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), which outline their specific needs and the support required to meet them. While the school has traditionally employed Teaching Assistants (TAs), the role has evolved to meet the more complex demands of EHCPs, requiring a dedicated ECHA.

Role Overview

As an ECHA, you will:

  • Work under the guidance of teaching staff, Higher-Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs), and medical professionals.
  • Support pupils with education, care, and medical programmes to enhance their access to learning.
  • Assist teachers in managing pupils support needs and contribute to the organisation and smooth running of the classroom.

This role may involve working in the classroom, alternative learning environments, or off-site locations.

Key Responsibilities

Education
  • Provide tailored support to pupils with special needs, ensuring they can fully engage in learning activities.
  • Assist with the management of the classroom environment and pupil behaviours.
  • Support teachers and HLTAs with planning and delivering learning activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of pupils progress and responses to learning.

Health
  • Participate in training to develop medical competencies and implement this training to support pupils' needs. This may include gastrostomy support, emergency epilepsy treatment, and care for pupils with breathing difficulties (e.g., tracheostomy support).
  • Help develop and implement health care plans.
  • Assist with first aid and welfare tasks, such as attending to unwell pupils.
  • Perform routine medical support under the supervision of nursing staff.
Care
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils during learning activities.
  • Provide intimate care when required.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of Risk Assessments and Personal Care plans.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and address conflicts in line with school policies, promoting responsibility among pupils.
Hours and Pay
  • Working Hours: 9:00 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday to Friday.
  • Commitment: Full availability is required for all five days.
  • Pay: £97 per day.
  • Contract: Temp-to-perm after 12 weeks.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children with special educational needs while developing valuable skills in education, health, and care.
