About the Role

Butler Rose are currently working in partnership with a precision manufacturer in the Plymouth area who have a current requirement for a skilled Mechanical Engineer who possesses sourcing or supply chain experience.

The role will sit within the procurement team of the business, and bring engineering knowledge to the department, supporting NPIs, driving quality and delivering cost reductions.

Training will be provided for the purchasing element of the role (as long as there is base level experience), it is key for the chosen person to possess in depth engineering knowledge, ideally in steel.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Bring engineering knowledge to the purchasing team to support NPIs, drive cost reductions activities, improve quality and reduce risks in the supply chain.
  • Use engineering knowledge to source components for NPI projects by working closely with the engineering team to understand technical specifications, drawings, and data.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for direct components, using industry insights to identify, vet, and qualify new suppliers.
  • Assess risks and threats within the supply chain, prioritising and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with key suppliers to ensure quality, reliability, and competitiveness.
  • Ensure adherence to sourcing and contracting policies, procedures, risk management frameworks, and ethical standards.

Key Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a mechanical engineering role with purchasing, or supply chain involvement.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, and technical data.
  • Demonstrable ability to source, assess, and qualify suppliers based on technical and commercial factors.
  • Knowledge of cost-saving techniques and inventory optimisation.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
