Role: Principal Mechanical Engineer

Site Location: Devonport (Hybrid - around 2 days onsite a month, this can depend on stage of project)

Rate: Negotiable

Duration: 12 month contract

The Major Infrastructure Projects directorate provides major new or upgraded dock, berth and building infrastructure projects to provide facilities for the ship and submarine sustainment programmes. You'll work with multi-discipline infrastructure system designs to provide an overall sustainment capability mainly for dry dock systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

Day-to-day, you'll be supporting the engineering capability of the new systems through the design lifecycle in accordance with the design process:

  • To manage the delivery of mechanical engineering work packages to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost.
  • Applying systems engineering approach to develop and validate design requirements
  • Ensuring compliance with client specifications, technical regulations and standards
  • Collaboration across engineering functions and stakeholders to integrate designs within the overall facility layout and manage interfaces
  • Technical management of specialist sub-contract designers
  • Maintaining the engineering configuration of the design intent (change control)

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • The candidate must have experience in;
  • Mechanical engineering background preferably within Defence, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, or other highly regulated industry
  • Engineering principles for the design of mechanical process systems and building services (eg water services, industrial gases)
  • Regulations, legislation and standards that are applicable to mechanical system design and construction (including Principal
  • Designer responsibilities under CDM)
  • Experience of substantiation of process equipment for justification of Nuclear Safety Functions (desirable)

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A degree, degree apprentice or demonstrable time served in an appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council (or actively working towards)
