About the school
The school is an education setting based for 16 – 25+ years old with Special Educational Needs. It is based on 350 acres of beautiful Dorset countryside. The school operate enterprise activities and vocational teaching methods to bridge the gap between education and employment for young people and adults with SEN in Dorset and the local area. The school focuses on vocations like horticulture, agriculture, equine skills and animal care as well as many more, to enrich the lives and education of its pupils. 

The Role
As an Animal Care Teaching Assistant, you will support SEN students in outdoor settings, helping with hands-on animal care. This role focuses on practical skills and personal growth, offering a unique outdoor learning experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students in their practical learning experiences in animal care, assisting with tasks such as animal feeding, grooming, cleaning, and general animal husbandry.
  • Adapt teaching materials and activities to suit individual learning needs, ensuring accessibility and engagement for all students.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of animal care programs, including feeding, caring for, and maintaining animals as part of the students' vocational training.
  • Foster a safe and supportive environment where students can build their confidence and independence.
  • Work closely with a team of experienced staff to track and monitor the progress of students, offering guidance and encouragement.
  • Promote positive behaviour and engagement, providing tailored support to students to help them succeed.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ideally need a valid driving license and be willing to drive
  • A passion for working with young people and a commitment to supporting individuals with Special Educational Needs.
  • Experience or a keen interest in animal care, horticulture, agriculture, or equine studies.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive, solution-focused attitude.
  • Experience in an education or care setting is desirable but not essential.
  • A relevant qualification in animal care or a related field (e.g., Level 2 or 3 in Animal Care).
  • Experience working with young people with SEN or in a vocational training environment.
