Weston College is the regional provider for the Prison Education Framework (PEF) across the South West of England and is now seeking to recruit an outstanding and highly motivated Reading Specialist Lecturer at HMP Portland.

This is a fixed term contract until 31st March 2025.

Day to day duties of the role

  • To deliver a high quality curriculum delivering Reading courses or an alternative as led by the Weston College management team.
  • Developing and maintaining a full course file including comprehensive scheme of learning and lesson planning.
  • Developing and completing ILPs and contextual statements to monitor individual learner progress.
  • Accurately completing registers, learner enrolments and completions.

Required skills and qualifications

  • A Degree, or professional qualification, which is appropriate to the work.
  • In relation to vocational teaching posts an appropriate qualification in that field will be deemed satisfactory.
  • All candidates for teaching posts must possess a recognised Teaching Qualification, or be prepared to gain within the first two years of service, with the assistance of the College.
  • Knowledge and experience of current teaching and learning strategies.

About HMP Portland

HMP Portland is an adult male prison and young offender institution (YOI) on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, for men aged 18 and over. Residents can train and earn qualifications in professions such as bricklaying, painting and decorating and carpentry and joinery. Other courses offered include functional skills, PSD and music. Portland residents have the opportunity to leave the prison for short periods of time, this is known as ROTL (release on temporary licence) which can be used to gain work experience in the local community and prepare them for release.
