We are looking for….

We have an exciting vacancy for a Senior Asset Engineer (South) within the Southern Distribution Asset Engineering team. This role would require management of <7Bar assets located in the North and West regions of our network, this includes Dorset, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and the Isle of Wight. The role will require travel to sites and office locations across the Southern network.

How you’ll support us on our mission to keep people safe and warm…

  • Review asset condition information and use engineering knowledge and judgement to develop intervention plans.
  • Produce comprehensive business cases for investment committee approval.
  • Support and monitor the delivery of work programmes for the current regulatory price control period and contribute to development of plans for future price control periods.
  • Develop an understanding of our legal rights and obligations for pipelines and pressure regulating sites, managing conflict where third parties encroach on our land or build over easements. This can include supporting the legal team with any necessary recovery or enforcement.
  • Support the development and implementation of new policies.
  • Review inspection reports and recommend remedial actions with the competent authority.
  • Support investigations into integrity issues, operational abnormalities and external factors such as environmental damage or inappropriate development adjacent to sites and pipelines.
  • Liaison with operational colleagues to ensure maintenance and construction activities are completed & recorded correctly.
  • Interacting with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and other organisations.

  • With a positive and flexible approach to work you will be highly motivated with good organisational, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills. In addition, you need to be an effective communicator at all levels and be able to act on your own initiative.
  • The successful candidate will ideally have an engineering degree (mech/chemical) however this requirement may be relaxed where candidate demonstrates exceptional abilities in terms of criteria specified above.
  • Professional registration as a Chartered or Incorporate Engineer would be advantageous, however candidates with a commitment to attain registration and a demonstrated commitment to personal CPD will also be welcomed.
  • Candidates would also be expected to demonstrate high level of computer literacy and associated skills. It is essential that you are committed to the SGN values and play a key role in your team delivering SGN targets while operating within our safety rules and culture.
  • The successful candidate is required to hold a driving licence and be prepared to travel periodically for site visits and meetings.

The technical skills and job knowledge/experience essential in this job are:

  • Good knowledge of the gas industry
  • Good knowledge of applicable legislation, e.g. Pressure Systems Safety Regulations, Pipeline Safety Regulations
  • Good understanding of the gas transmission/distribution systems and the linked dependences of the systems
  • Good knowledge and understanding of IGEM standards
