Graduate Energy and Sustainability Advisor
Our client is looking for an Energy & Sustainability Advisor to join their team at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. Graduate Energy and Sustainability Advisor Role Overview:
The Energy & Sustainability Advisor will be responsible for managing energy at QA Hospital alongside improving sustainability through energy usage optimisation and waste minimalization. They will be responsible for supporting the delivery of Net Zero plans whilst supporting the Trust with their plans for the NHS Greener Agenda and reaching net zero by 2040. They will stay up to date with the latest energy and sustainability policies and technologies and manage energy optimization and sustainability improvement projects.
The role is suitable for post-graduate students who are ready to start their career, ideally with a degree specialising in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, Energy, or a related field.
What will you deliver in the Graduate Energy and Sustainability Advisor role:
- Work with PHU to support the Trust to achieve their targets in the NHS greener agenda
- Prepare reports on environmental performance and assist and submit PHU reports, including the Energy Investment Report. Manage onsite Environmental Site inspections, highlighting any bad and good practice to the relevant teams and Senior Management
- Identifying training and upskilling required for staff on sustainability and their impact on the environment
- Monitor and management of waste, including waste licenses and monthly reporting of waste. Develop a waste minimisation plan to reduce waste generation
- Ensure environmental policies are followed and identify potential areas of improvement. Identifying relevant innovative technologies to improve the site
- Undertake site inspections and audits to improve the environmental performance of the site. Implement energy consumption optimisation through BMS and produce recommendations to Estates manager on changes required
- Collaborate with internal teams (Estates, BMS, procurement, projects, soft FM) to integrate sustainable practices into operations. Engage with external stakeholders (PHU and THC) to work towards their sustainability targets
- Research to identify and apply for funding opportunities
- Manage and be responsible for Carbon Reduction Schemes
Graduate Energy and Sustainability Advisor Skills & Experience:
- Ideally a degree in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, Energy, or a related field
- Desirable but not essential - Any certifications in sustainability (IEMA, BREEAM, CIWM)
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to promote and influence a positive culture
- Preferably at least 1 years experience in an environmental or energy role
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
This role includes a DBS Basic check therefore ability to pass is essential.

Salary £32,000 - there is potential negotiation on salary for more experienced candidates
