Job Title: Customs Clearance Clerk

Salary: Competitive 

Work Pattern:

  • Week 1 to 3: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00
  • Week 4: Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 17:00, plus on-call from 17:00 until 10:00
  • 1 in 4: Weekend on-call from 08:00 to 00:00

Training Provided:

  • Internal training from day one
  • BTEC Advanced Customs Intermediary training (Classroom setting provided by BIFA) after 12 months

Skills Required:

  • Personal: Self-motivated with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. Ability to identify and prioritize workloads. Excellent attention to detail.
  • Maths: Making quick and accurate calculations.
  • Data Entry: Quick and accurate data entry skills. Knowledge and experience of using Excel. Knowledge of Data Freight software preferred. Knowledge of CNS, Pentant, destin8, and CHIEF preferred.
  • Communication: Ability to interface with customers and colleagues in a clear and pleasant manner.
  • Customs Clearance: Some knowledge of completing customs declarations preferred but training will be provided.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily clearance functions
  • Complete import and export customs declarations
  • Complete GB Border pre-notification requirements
  • Calculate and pay appropriate HMRC tariffs where required
  • Calculate and issue proforma invoices for the pre-payment of customs tariffs and charges where necessary
  • Maintain required databases and referencing systems
  • Classify and advise customers on GB Border requirements, customs declarations, and tariff classifications
  • Ensure the clearance of customers' goods is undertaken in a timely and accurate manner
  • Work with colleagues to identify outstanding workload to ensure fast, compliant, and effective services, thereby minimizing delays to customers' cargoes
  • Perform general administrative duties
  • Process and send customs declarations to HMRC
  • Maintain administrative records using databases
  • Maintain an accurate filing system
  • Assist with other projects as assigned by a senior employee
