Join a leading Lancashire based Students’ Union as a Finance Trustee.

About The SU

The organisation is an independent charity which exists to represent over 28,000 students at the University – a large University based in Preston, Lancashire. The organisation is run by students, for students and provides support, representation, advice, student groups and networks, and commercial activity through events, a bar and retail.

You will be joining the SU at a particularly exciting time as they have just launched a new 4 year strategy which is focused on tackling the cost of studying, boosting student wellbeing and increasing student attainment. They exist to support students to learn well and live more at University and their vision is that students are thriving because they are thriving too!

The new Finance Trustee will be at the forefront of supporting the successful delivery of the new strategy through sharing their professional expertise and strategic mindset whilst providing constructive challenges to enable the SU to be the best they can be for their students.

They are delighted to be inviting applications for candidates to fill a Trustee position with expertise in Finance.

Key responsibilities:

Provide strategic oversight in finance.  Challenge and guide the elected officers and CEO.  Build strong relationships within the board and the wider SU community.  Ensure the Board works together with officers and staff to prioritise students' belonging, wellbeing, and success in everything they do.

Who are they looking for?

People with the skills, experience and capability to oversee finance at a strategic level.  People who resonate with their values and are eager to make a tangible difference.  Collaborative team players who can commit to collective leadership and can build and nurture strong relationships.

What’s the commitment?

There are 10 meetings per year which they are happy to offer a blend of remote and in person access for (mostly remote is OK), with two away days in January and June which they would like you to attend in person. They expect the commitment to be around one day per month.

Commitment to diversifying the board

In order for the SU to be able to make sure every student is able to celebrate who they are, shape their university experience and feel connected to a community, they need to continue to innovate and make sure they champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in everything that they do. This means having a commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive Trustee Board.

They would particularly welcome applications from Black and Asian candidates, those who identify as women or non-binary, and disabled candidates, in order to improve representation of these groups on the Board.

They are committed to ensuring that people with a diverse range of skills and experience are encouraged to apply and contribute fully as Trustees. They will strive to remove the barriers that prevent people from applying to become Trustees and ensure that the application and selection processes are inclusive of and accessible to people with a wide range of skills and lived experience.
