Job Title: Teaching Assistant, Reception Class, ASD One to One Support

Location: Garstang

Reports to: Class Teacher / SEN Coordinator

Hours: Full time, until July 2025

Job Purpose:

To support the learning, development, and well-being of a Reception pupil, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and communication difficulties. The role involves working closely with the class teacher, SEN team, and other staff to create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment, fostering each child's individual potential.

Key Responsibilities:

Support for Pupils:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to pupils with ASD and communication difficulties, focusing on their specific learning and developmental needs.
  • Help implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs), adapting tasks and activities as needed to align with each child's goals.
  • Assist pupils with communication through alternative methods (e.g., visual aids, PECS, Makaton, or other augmentative and alternative communication tools).
  • Foster social interaction by supporting positive play, friendship-building, and cooperative learning.
  • Promote independence, patience, and resilience in the learning environment.

Classroom Support:

  • Assist the teacher in planning and preparing differentiated activities to suit the needs of pupils with ASD.
  • Provide structured and consistent routines that help pupils feel safe and supported throughout the school day.
  • Support positive behaviour management strategies to address and minimize any behavioural challenges.
  • Aid in setting up and organizing resources, visual aids, and sensory tools to help engage students effectively.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the SENCO, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists to implement recommended interventions.
  • Maintain open, positive communication with parents and guardians to support each pupil's learning journey.
  • Provide feedback to the teacher and SENCO on pupil progress, achievements, and any concerns.
  • Attend relevant training sessions, team meetings, and development workshops to stay informed on best practices.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Empathy and patience when working with young children, particularly those with additional needs.
  • Strong understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including strategies for supporting communication difficulties.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with children, staff, and parents.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing needs in the classroom.
  • Flexibility and a positive, proactive approach in responding to students' unique challenges and strengths.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience working with children with ASD, ideally within an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of alternative communication methods is highly desirable.
  • Relevant qualifications in child development, special education, or a teaching assistant qualification are essential.
