Our client prides themselves on delivering high-quality precision manufacturing from their modern facility located in Prestwick, Scotland. At the core of the company are creativity and innovation, with quality being the cornerstone upon which the business and its reputation have been built.

They are now looking for an Engineering Estimator to join their team.

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for Machine Shop projects. This includes evaluating project specifications, determining materials, labour, and equipment costs, and providing detailed quotes to support the company’s production and sales teams. The Estimator will work closely with engineers, production staff, and suppliers to ensure that the estimates are competitive and reflect the company’s ability to meet quality standards and deadlines.

Are you the right person for the job?

  • Relevant Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering experience is preferred. Certifications or training in cost estimation or manufacturing processes are a plus
  • 3+ years of experience in a similar estimating role within a machine shop, or manufacturing environment
  • Experience with machining processes (CNC, lathes, milling, grinding, etc.) is highly beneficial
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, and machining techniques
  • Proficiency in estimating software and tools (ERP systems, CAD software, spreadsheet programs)
  • Excellent understanding of materials, tooling, and equipment costs
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with clients, vendors, and internal teams
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to adjust estimates based on changing project requirements or conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail

What will your role look like?

  • Reviewing Project Specifications: Analyse technical drawings and other project documents to understand customer requirements, design details, and production processes
  • Cost Estimation: Prepare accurate cost estimates for machining, including direct and indirect costs such as labour, materials, overhead, and equipment use
  • Pricing Materials and Components: Research and evaluate suppliers to determine the cost of raw materials, tools, and components
  • Labour and Equipment Costing: Estimate labour hours based on the complexity of the work, utilising shop floor standards and machine capabilities.  Determine appropriate equipment costs for specific jobs
  • Risk Analysis: Identify potential risks and challenges (e.g. material shortages, machine downtime, regulatory changes) that may affect the project’s cost or timeline and factor these into the estimate
  • Proposal Preparation: Prepare detailed proposals and quotations based on the cost estimates, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in providing the information to sales or clients
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, production managers, and sales team to clarify project requirements, discuss potential cost-saving strategies, and ensure accurate pricing and feasibility of production
  • Cost Comparison: Monitor and compare actual production costs against estimates, analyse variances, and adjust future estimates to improve accuracy
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with industry trends, technology advancements, and market conditions to ensure cost estimates are competitive and realistic
  • Documentation: Maintain organised records of estimates, quotes, and changes to the original scope of work. Updates estimates when project scope changes or new information is provided
  • Communication: Act as a point of contact for clients, project managers, and internal teams for questions or clarifications related to estimates and quotations
