About Us:We are seeking a Lead Design Engineer to deliver infrastructure projects across the West Sussex region. We are committed to excellence, safety, and innovation in the civil engineering sector. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Design Engineer to join our client's team, overseeing and executing a wide range of projects with expertise in highways, civils, groundworks, streetworks, district heating, and more.

Job Overview:As the Lead Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design of complex civil engineering projects, including highways, groundworks, and utilities. Your role will involve site-based design work, managing projects from initial concept to completion, ensuring that all work meets safety standards, is designed efficiently, and is compliant with industry regulations. You will also need hands-on experience with setting out trenches, utilities, and deep excavation projects. This position is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in civil design, combined with field experience in construction and engineering operations.

Key Responsibilities for the Lead Design Engineer:

  • Lead and oversee the design of civil engineering projects, including highways, groundworks, utilities, and district heating systems.
  • Conduct site assessments, setting out trenches, utilities, and overseeing deep excavation work.
  • Utilize CAD software to create accurate and detailed designs for civil engineering projects.
  • Ensure that temporary works are designed and implemented to meet safety and technical standards.
  • Collaborate closely with site teams to ensure designs are properly executed in the field.
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers and field teams, providing technical support and guidance.
  • Review and sign off on design drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Ensure all work complies with industry regulations and health and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve on-site engineering issues, working closely with contractors and subcontractors.

Qualifications and Experience required for the Lead Design Engineer:

  • CSCS Card (essential)
  • SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) certification (desirable)
  • NVQ in Civil Engineering or equivalent (desirable)
  • Proven experience in highways, civils, groundworks, streetworks, and district heating projects.
  • Hands-on experience with setting out trenches and setting out utilities.
  • Experience working with deep excavation trenches and associated safety requirements.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar).
  • Solid understanding of temporary works (temp works) and safety protocols related to them.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think on your feet.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead teams and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of civil engineering design principles and best practices.
