We are working with a prestigious Boarding and Day Prep School in West Berkshire, recruiting for an Accountant (Tax and Treasury Specialist) to join their finance team.

Full-time, Permanent Role - Immediate start, based on-site.

This role would be ideal for a professional, part-qualified or qualified by experience accountant with strong expertise in tax, VAT, and treasury. You will be responsible for managing and overseeing various financial functions, with a focus on VAT and tax compliance, as well as general financial operations.

Key Responsibilities and Duties include:

  • Reporting to the Head of Finance and working closely with the Director of Finance and Operations, you will support the management of the school’s finances, including VAT returns, monthly cash flow forecasting, and monthly management accounts.
  • Manage VAT compliance—submit VAT returns, ensure timely payments to HMRC, and assist with voluntary disclosures when necessary.
  • Oversee bank reconciliations, purchase orders, invoicing, and staff expense claims.
  • Prepare and assist with monthly management accounts, budget reports, and year-end financial processes.
  • Provide VAT advice to the Director of Finance and Operations and liaise with external VAT advisors.
  • Assist with payroll administration and financial audits.
  • Cover for the Head of Finance when absent and support with ad-hoc financial projects.

Key Requirements:

  • Part-qualified or qualified by experience, with a strong understanding of VAT, tax rules, and general financial management.
  • Experience in budgeting, management accounts, and tax reporting.
  • High attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness to take on payroll administration and provide advice on charity legislation.
