Senior Geophysicist

Location:RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.

Package: £46,130 - £84,000, (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience. Please note, the hiring manager will consider applications from individuals with Senior Management experience)

Let us introduce the role

We are looking to recruit a Senior Geophysicist to work on the Nuclear Treaty Verification programme, supporting AWE's national nuclear security role. For over 60 years, AWE Blacknest has been the home of the UK's Forensic Seismology Team, and since the opening for signature of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996, the home of the UK National Data Centre (UK NDC) too.

You will work as part of a team advising the UK Government on the technical verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). You will analyse data and carry out research to ensure our monitoring facilities are protected from seismic noise, balancing technical work, stakeholders, policy development and legal challenges, in addition to gaining a broad understanding of the wider context in which we operate.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Enhance our capability to assess CTBT relevant events through safeguarding our monitoring facilities

  • Develop enhancements to support the technical verification of the CTBT

  • Prepare and present professional-quality presentations and technical reports to technical peers, management and external stakeholders

  • Participate in national and international collaborative work

Who are we looking for?

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following:

  • A bachelor degree or higher in a physical/mathematical science, or engineering (or equivalent experience)

  • In depth understanding of how seismo-acoustic waves are generated, propagate and are recorded

  • Knowledge of geophysical theory including e.g., source terms, attenuation

  • Strongly numerate

  • Experience of microseismic monitoring of low frequency noise and vibration

  • Strong analytical background

  • Experience of managing and analysing geophysical data sets

  • Experience of signal processing and seismic waveform modelling

  • Knowledge of one or more computer programming or scripting languages and demonstrate the ability to implement your own algorithms

  • Extensive experience of technical project management and delivery

  • Experience of large-scale field experiments, e.g., seismic

  • Proficiency with Unix-like operating systems (Linux, macOS)

  • Able to work independently and unsupervised, as well as within a team to achieve common goals

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing

  • Experience of writing and reviewing business cases/research proposals

  • You will need to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. The nature of our work does mean you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years in order to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.
