We are seeking an experienced Toolmaker to join a well-established manufacturing site in Reading, Berkshire.

The Reading manufacturing site has around 40 injection moulding machines and extensive extrusion lines, this position is critical for maintaining the high standards of their production tools and will involve direct mentorship of junior engineers and apprentices.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Toolmaker, preferably with experience of Injection Moulding tools coupled with a wealth of practical knowledge and hands-on experience in a variety of manual machining and toolmaking processes.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Make and assemble new plastic injection moulds to the highest standards, involving accurate reading and interpretation of highly technical engineering drawings, precise final grinding of mould parts, and the complete assembly of moulds.
  • Maintain and fit new injection mould tools using manual milling machines, lathes, and cylindrical grinders.
  • Attend to, diagnose, and rectify any faults or damages to moulding tools.
  • Perform regular maintenance on mould tools to ensure they are always ready for use.
  • Carry out repairs and modifications to tools as required by customers and authorised by management.
  • Operate a variety of hand tools such as files, hacksaws, and grinders.
  • Ensure that all toolroom equipment is operated in accordance with established operating procedures and promptly report any faults.
  • Actively participate in and facilitate continuous improvements to tooling and production methods.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations within the toolroom.
  • Assist the Maintenance Department as needed to support overall facility operations.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to meet set targets for delivery, quality, and efficiency.
  • Maintain and update relevant documentation to keep accurate records of tool designs, repairs, and maintenance activities.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Extensive experience as a Toolmaker, preferably with knowledge of injection moulding tools.
  • Ability to completely manage the lifecycle of tools including disassembling, fixing, and reassembling.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret highly technical engineering drawings.
  • Detailed knowledge in assembling new, high-quality mould tools.
  • Skilled in the use of surface grinding machines and toolroom inspection equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with various machining processes including milling, turning, welding, sparking, and spark erosion.
  • Proficient in designing, manufacturing or repairing multi-cavity mould tools and progression press tools will be advantageous.
  • Experience in mentoring and training junior engineers or apprentices.
