If this sounds like you, then we’re looking for a Senior Volunteering and Community Officer to join our team at Ham House and Garden. 

Salary: £30,147. Please note, this is inclusive of an outer London weighting allowance of £3,315 per annum.

What it's like to work here You’ll be reporting to the Visitor Operations and Experiences Manager and working with teams in the house, garden and across the visitor experience. 

Open throughout the year, this atmospheric 17th-century house sits on the banks of the River Thames in Richmond. It is the creation of the tenacious Duchess of Lauderdale and her husband, who together transformed Ham into one of the grandest houses in England. The glorious gardens include a productive kitchen garden and beautiful spots perfect for a picnic. 

Typically, the working hours are 9am-5pm and you’ll be part of a Duty Manager and Visitor Experience Lead rota. Some weekends and bank holidays working is required.

What you'll be doing You will be leading our ambition to provide spaces and places to connect with heritage, nature and each other; be good neighbours and partners for community benefit; and work beyond our boundaries to help address unequal access to nature, history and beauty.

You’ll use your experience in community engagement to explore and deepen links with the local community, building connections with new and diverse audiences. You’ll also help to hone the skills our teams need in order to welcome and work with all kinds of people. 

You'll support volunteer managers to ensure the experience of volunteers feels mutually beneficial. You’ll help to make Ham a flexible, positive and inclusive place for partners, community groups and current and future volunteers to get involved.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if have: 

  • understanding and experience of good practise in volunteer management 
  • understanding and experience of good practice in community engagement and involvement, as well as broader participation and partnership working
  • excellent organisational and planning skills 
  • ability to coach and support those managing, supervising and working alongside volunteers and community partners 
  • a proactive approach and strong communication skills 
  • flexible and collaborative, a team player who’s happy to lead on and work with other people’s agendas towards a shared goal
