General Operative

Location: RomseySalary: £12.57 - £13.28 per hourHours: Either 7.00am till 15.00pm or 8.00am till 16.00pmContract: Temporary

Your role

As a General Operative, you will carry out essential maintenance tasks across public spaces, helping to keep streets, parks, and local areas clean and well-maintained. Whether emptying bins, litter picking, or grass cutting, your work will directly improve the community.

Key duties include:

  • Emptying domestic and litter bins in line with service standards
  • Using basic tools such as litter pickers, push mowers, pedestrian sweepers, strimmers, and brooms
  • Acting as a reversing assistant for colleagues when required
  • Issuing information tags and completing relevant records
  • Representing the council positively while carrying out tasks
  • Working independently or as part of a team to meet service commitments

What we’re looking for

Skills and experience:

  • Ability to work alone for long periods or as part of a team
  • Flexibility to undertake different tasks in various locations
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Experience in a similar role, such as waste management or grounds maintenance
  • Experience using manual handling tools and equipment
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Requirements:

  • A full UK driving licence may be required for some roles
  • Knowledge of local government environmental services is beneficial
