Our client a fresh produce business supplying locally and nationally to retail, wholesale and exporting into Europe.
Position Overview
This role will oversee the day-to-day operations of the farm, ensuring the efficient management of all resources, including land, crops, equipment, and personnel. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills to maximise productivity, maintain assets, and build strong relationships within the community and industry.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
* Plan and coordinate farming activities such as planting, irrigation, harvesting, and crop rotation.
* Develop and implement crop management strategies to optimize yield and quality.
* Ensure compliance with agricultural standards and government regulations.
Asset Management:
* Oversee the maintenance and proper use of all farm assets including buildings, vehicles, and machinery.
* Conduct regular inspections to ensure all equipment and infrastructure are in optimal working condition.
* Implement asset management systems to track and manage farm inventory effectively.
Harvesting Operations
* Coordinate and supervise all harvesting activities to ensure timely and efficient crop collection.
* Manage labour force during peak harvesting periods to maximize productivity.
* Oversee post-harvest handling and storage to maintain crop quality.
Irrigation and Water Management
* Develop and manage efficient irrigation systems to ensure adequate water supply for crops.
* Monitor and adjust irrigation schedules based on crop needs and weather conditions.
* Implement water conservation practices to promote sustainable farming.
Equipment and Machinery
* Oversee the operation and maintenance of farm equipment and machinery.
* Train staff on proper use and safety protocols related to farm machinery.
* Schedule regular maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
Relationship Management
* Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, buyers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
* Represent the farm in community and industry events to promote its interests and build its reputation.
* Negotiate contracts and agreements to secure favourable terms for the farm.
Personnel Management
* Recruit, train, and supervise farm staff, ensuring they are equipped to perform their duties effectively.
* Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to improve staff productivity and morale.
* Ensure a safe working environment by enforcing health and safety regulations and practices.
Financial Management
* Develop and manage budgets, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
* Monitor financial performance and prepare reports for the owner or board of directors.
* Identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Farm Management, or related field.
* Minimum of 5 years of experience in farm management and growing operations.
* Strong knowledge of agricultural practices, crop management, and modern farming techniques.
* Proficiency in operating and maintaining farm machinery and equipment.
* Excellent leadership and communication skills.
* Ability to manage budgets and financial plans.
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions under pressure.
* Familiarity with agricultural software and technology.
Physical Requirements
* Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
* Capability to perform physically demanding tasks.
* Willingness to work extended hours during peak seasons.
