Senior Paleoenvironmental and Geoarchaeologist | Sheffield & Bakewell | Full-time | Occasional fieldwork and flexibility for home working | £36,620 - £42,400 depending on experience

Archaeological Research Services Ltd is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Geoarchaeologist and Paleoenvironmental Officer to join our dynamic team. This is a rare opportunity to work with a leading archaeological company on a wide range of innovative and cutting-edge projects across the UK, and potentially beyond.

Based within our Specialist Services Division, the role will involve leading a small team of experts in geoarchaeology and paleoenvironmental studies.

Are you the right person for the job?

  • Significant experience in geoarchaeology and/or paleoenvironmental reconstruction, with a strong portfolio of completed projects
  • Proven ability in geoarchaeological mapping, sediment coring, and analysis, along with proficiency in one or more paleoenvironmental proxies
  • Strong project management skills, including experience in supervising teams and liaising with clients and curators
  • Experience in producing high-quality reports and publications
  • Advanced IT skills, with ideal proficiency in GIS, RockWorks, and other relevant software
  • Excellent written English and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, detailed reports and publications
  • A full driving license and the ability to drive company vehicles as required
  • Experience in managing health and safety responsibilities on-site and in the office
  • A passion for developing and mentoring junior staff, fostering their growth in the field
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks effectively

What will your role look like?

  • Lead and manage a small team within the Specialist Services Division, contributing to the growth of the division and promoting innovative data-sharing and integration
  • Oversee geoarchaeological mapping, sediment coring, analysis, and characterisation, including one or more specialized techniques such as pollen analysis, botanical macrofossil analysis, and soil micromorphology
  • Support the Landscape Prospection Service, where you’ll integrate geoarchaeological, geophysical, geochemical, and remote sensing data to assess and understand landscapes
  • Manage client relationships, liaising with clients and planning archaeologists while ensuring projects meet their deadlines and objectives
  • Undertake fieldwork, including survey, sediment sampling, and the completion of associated post-excavation work, such as archiving and reporting
  • Prepare high-quality reports for commercial and research-based archaeological projects, as well as contribute to peer-reviewed publications where appropriate
  • Supervise and mentor junior team members, supporting their development through training, feedback, and best practices
  • Maintain and ensure the proper use of lab equipment and field resources
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety policies and contribute to risk assessments as required
  • Participate in staff training, development, and team engagement initiatives, fostering a positive and productive work environment
  • Take an active role in business development, including networking, inputting to new projects, and identifying commercial opportunities
  • Drive company vehicles when required and maintain their roadworthiness
  • Ensure that all projects are completed to high standards of quality and within agreed timelines and budgets
  • Any other duties that may be reasonably allocated from time to time
