Assistant Hydrographic Surveyor
Location: Remote with access to Tinsley Marina, Sheffield

An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Hydrographic Surveyor to join a busy asset management team on a 6-month contract basis. This remote role requires access to Tinsley Marina, Sheffield, with regular travel across the network to conduct fieldwork. The role will involve assisting with hydrographic surveys, processing survey data, and creating spatial information outputs to support engineering, dredging, and reservoir safety projects. Travel may involve spending up to 2 nights per week away from home.
Key Responsibilities-
Assist with survey fieldwork, operating echosounder equipment and small survey boats.

Drive the team’s 4x4 van to various survey locations.

Process raw hydrographic survey data, cleaning erroneous noise to create Digital Terrain Models (DTM).

Use DTM data to generate charts highlighting areas in need of dredging.

Work with HYPACK hydrographic processing software and Terramodel survey software.

Use Excel spreadsheets and other spatial data tools to analyse and present survey results.
We are seeking a self-motivated team player with a keen eye for detail and an interest in spatial data. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn, willing to travel, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Full training will be provided.
Essential Requirements:-
Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.

Valid driving licence.

Willingness to travel and stay away from home for up to 2 nights per week.

Experience using hydrographic surveying software such as HYPACK.

Knowledge of GIS and other spatial information technologies.

Commercial driving experience (van) beneficial for insurance purposes.

We currently have an opportunity for an Assistant Hydrographic Surveyor on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our equipment base in Sheffield and from there travel across the Trust’s network to carry out field work. This Assistant Hydrographic Surveyor will be part of a busy asset management team which provides surveys of canals, rivers, reservoirs and docks across the Canal & River Trust network. In this role you will help the Senior Hydrographic Surveyors. This will involve collecting survey data using echosounder and other equipment, then processing and presenting spatial information on the waterway environment.

About the role
The Assistant Hydrographic Surveyor will help the team collect and then post-process Hydrographic survey data to generate outputs for use in the wider organisation including dredging, reservoir safety and engineering.

The role will involve using specialist Hydrographic processing software (HYPACK) and survey software (Terramodel) as well as Excel spreadsheets. Â

Your key accountabilities will include:Â
