Mental Health Teaching Assistant

Veritas Education is seeking a dedicated Mental Health Teaching Assistant to fill several roles that have become available in the South Sheffield area. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Teacher and pupils to help provide tailored support to students with trauma and Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH). These roles are available either part-time or full-time.

The Role:

  • You will be supporting a class of between 6-10 pupils, assisting the teacher in supporting the pupils in the class.
  • Assist the class teacher in planning and delivering personalised material and learning activities with a focus on mental health and emotional support.
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with trauma and mental health needs, using a trauma-informed approach.
  • Support pupils in the class with any social, emotional, and communicational skills, helping them to build resilience and coping strategies.
  • Help monitor students' progress and feedback to the teacher, especially regarding emotional and behavioural development.
  • Help the class teacher manage any classroom behaviour to ensure it is a safe and supportive environment for children with trauma.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience working with children with special educational needs, particularly those who have experienced trauma or have mental health needs (preferably in an educational setting but not essential).
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and mental health challenges in children.
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour using a range of behaviour management techniques tailored to emotional and mental health needs.
  • Ability to understand and react to pupils' emotional responses and physical reactions, offering appropriate support.
