Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager to lead our organisation's HSE initiatives. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with relevant legislation, foster a culture of safety, and promote continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance across all levels of the business.

The ideal candidate must hold a NEBOSH qualification and possess the ability to effectively engage and influence staff, management, and external partners.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategic Direction:

  • Provide leadership, motivation, and guidance to staff on all Health, Safety, and Environmental matters.
  • Advise the senior management team and board of directors on strategic health and safety directions to support business objectives.
  • Collaborate with production teams to enforce safe working practices and procedures.

Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Identify potential risks and develop, implement, and monitor effective mitigation solutions.
  • Review, assess, and ensure compliance with current and upcoming HSE regulations.
  • Maintain and oversee robust systems and procedures to achieve and sustain compliance, including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments and compile and submit RIDDOR reports as required.
  • Manage and implement COSHH processes for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.

Incident Management & Continuous Improvement:

  • Lead investigations into incidents, accidents, and near misses; determine root causes and implement preventive measures.
  • Conduct regular audits and engage with teams to uphold continuous improvement programs.
  • Analyse and report on HSE KPIs, using data to identify improvement areas and track progress.
  • Measure and report on environmental performance, including energy usage and emissions.

Training & Development:

  • Develop and deliver HSE training in collaboration with HR, maintaining accurate training records.
  • Organise and lead toolbox talks to address key HSE topics and updates.

Engagement & Documentation:

  • Proactively engage with managers, staff, and external entities to agree on corrective actions and improvement plans.
  • Lead H&S committee meetings and liaise with partners, such as the University of Sheffield.
  • Maintain and review emergency plans to ensure they remain effective and up-to-date.
  • Oversee all HSE documentation, ensuring accuracy and readiness for internal and external audits.

Shop Floor Presence:

  • Maintain a visible presence on the shop floor, fostering positive relationships with manufacturing operatives to support a safety-first culture.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with the use of PPE for staff, visitors, and contractors.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Proven experience in a similar HSE management role within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Excellent understanding of HSE regulations, legislation, and industry best practices.

Desirable:

  • Experience conducting audits and developing continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with environmental performance metrics, energy usage analysis, and emissions reporting.
  • Knowledge of COSHH processes and hazardous substance management.
