The business processes claims for the transport industry; so, for example if some cargo on a ship is lost or damaged, people will be due money. The business handles these claims.
Your job will be to help with registering new claims, so when someone calls in, you will get information and input it into the system. You will also issue invoices, so businesses that have used the services know how much they need to pay. There will also be a range of other administrative duties that you will help with. And you will be able to help with the processing of the claims to some extent.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
Over the years, this job has led people to develop their skills and move into a role as a Case Handler, where you would be processing the claims. This is a more challenging role, with more money. This is how the Manager of the team originally became a Claims Handler. It depends on how you do in the job, but others have done this in 2 to 6 months, and got a pay rise to £23,000 or £24,000.
Or, if you prefer to stay in this role then that is ok too, and you will get pay rises in time.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
While a degree is preferred, it may be that you started studying at university but didn't complete your degree (2 of the last 3 people who joined in one of these jobs didn’t, due to problems they had).
Or if you have a degree then it may be that you’ve struggled to find something. For example, another person who joined the team has a degree in Classics, which doesn’t lend itself to a specific career but demonstrates good writing ability which is crucial in the role.
And on that point, you will need to be an accurate writer, both with numbers and words, as it’s important that information is entered correctly.
A lot is just copying information in, but it needs to be accurate as it will be entered on documentation related to the claim.
WHERE YOU’LL BE WORKING
The offices are in Sidcup (south-east London / Kent), and you will need to be within reasonable commuting distance.
