Information about the Role:

As a Junior Doctor at Southleigh Community Hospital you will be responsible for providing support to the Associate Specialists and Consultants in the medical assessment and treatment of patients who are admitted either formally as detained under the MHA2007 or informally, ensuring safety, privacy and dignity is paramount. Junior doctors have responsibilities for all inpatients within the unit.

Information about the Service:

At Southleigh Community Hospital we can accommodate up to 27 service users in 21 single en-suite bedrooms and 6 semi-independent apartments. These flexible apartments can be used to prepare service users for more independent living or alternatively to accommodate service users who require high level of personalised care and support.

We admit adult service users who may be stepping down from acute or secure NHS and independent settings or laterally from other rehabilitation units. We consider self-funded referrals too.

We provide intensive and holistic treatment that comprises expert pharmacological, psychological, nursing, and occupational therapy intervention. Treatment is tailored to the individual’s care plan that is written jointly with the service user, their family and approved by the funding authority.

Southleigh has an effective recovery and social inclusion programme that enables service users to access both community and unit-based leisure activities, adult education and vocational/work schemes.We are committed to empowering service users to attain their own potential through a person-centred rehabilitation approach.

Responsibilities within this role include:

  • Daily visits to units to check if there is any work outstanding for allocated patients and to provide appropriate medical cover for colleagues in their absence.
  • Liaison with the nursing team to address identified deficits of care and treatment to promote the wellbeing of the patient at all times.
  • Re-writing of medication prescription charts and TTOs according to Hospital policy and agreed standards and when required in consultation with the Responsible Clinician.
  • Ensuring that the Drug Allergy Status is known in relation to all individuals receiving an inpatient service.
  • Undertaking work required in terms of the admission of new patients. This includes the completion of a standard admission document which will include a full psychiatric history, physical examination and initial risk assessment.
  • Contacting family, carers and relevant professionals in the community to obtain any information required to plan the patients care.
  • Ensuring that all inpatients have had a physical health check, liaising with nursing staff to identify when checks are due.
  • Undertaking physical health checks in conjunction with the dedicated physical health lead and request further screening/testing or referral to third party departments as required.
  • Attendance at Multi-disciplinary meetings and daily morning meetings when allocated the assistance pager.
  • To undertake weekly reviews with allocated patients outside the MDT meeting receiving care in the unit. This meeting is to be documented in full in the clinical records. To undertake any clinical audit which is required to be undertaken.
  • Full documentation of all contact, treatment plans and progress to be made within the individual patient’s clinical records.
  • Preparation of reports such as Ward Review updates and discharge summaries as requested by the Medical Director/Supervising Consultant.
  • Other tasks as deemed suitable by the Medical Director/Supervising Consultant.

Medication prescription sheets:

All Doctors should be aware of the Hospital's Medicines Policy.

Personal Specification:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Evidence of delivery of good acute clinical care and medical practice
  • Ability to build relationships and communicate well with patients and colleagues
  • Good teaching and training
  • Professional behaviour and probity
  • Up to date knowledge and fitness to practise safely.
  • To have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
  • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice)
  • Able to demonstrate that they are acute care safe and up to date in resuscitation training.
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Capacity to be alert to dangers or problems. Demonstrates awareness of good decision making. Aware of own limitations. Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors.
