Junior Composite Draughtsman

Location:- Southampton, Hampshire

Department: Engineering/Design

Reports To: Senior Composite Draughtsman/Design Manager

Job Overview:

SYR are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior Composite Draughtsman to join our clients engineering team.

In this role, you will assist in the creation and modification of detailed technical drawings and schematics for composite materials used in the marine industry.

The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of drafting principles and be eager to develop their skills in composite material design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ideally, 1 years’ experience is required but a new graduate will be considered. The role is to support our Design Engineers with laminate installation and composite drawings.
  • Experience in Rhino 3D is required, SolidWorks software is beneficial.
  • The candidate should be an energetic, motivated self-starter, with a strong work ethic.
  • The ability to listen and act on feed-back, to want to learn new skills and expand into new areas of design, is essential.
  • Primarily this role will be focussed on developing 2D drawings, but opportunities to do more 3D modelling and be involved in other areas of yacht development will evolve with time. 
  • A background with experience of the production of composite components and yachts would be beneficial.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field (or a relevant combination of experience and education).
  • Basic knowledge of composite materials and their applications is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, CATIA, SolidWorks, etc.) and basic drafting techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in technical drawings and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new design techniques quickly.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience working with composite materials, laminates, or similar advanced materials.
  • Familiarity with industry standards for composite manufacturing and design (e.g., aerospace, automotive).
  • Knowledge of basic engineering principles and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to adapt to and learn new software tools and technologies related to drafting and design.
