Support Engineer - 12 month FTC (Part-time, Job share or fulltime) - Salary £41,892 to £48,874 (dependent on experience) - Hybrid working

Join us and you'll have an opportunity to make an impact and be part of an organisation committed to driving sustainable outcomes. At OS, we use location data and intelligence to help customers build more resilient societies, preserve the environment, foster healthier, happier spaces that people want to live in, and support the delivery of improved public services and critical infrastructure.

Join our dynamic Technology team

Our growing Technology team plays a key role in ensuring OS is at the cutting edge of geospatial capability and is looking for people to join them. Its mission is to work across the business to provide customer centric design and technology services.

The role sits within an existing Technology Support Team responsible for supporting and maintaining business-to-government & business-to-business APIs, web services and websites. The focus of this team is evolving into a proactive site reliability team, and this is where this new role will have a significant impact. Whether it's creating pipelines to automate deployments, enhancing auto-scaling to respond to peaks and troughs in requests, extending monitoring/alerting to improve observability, or creating and testing new builds to resolve security vulnerabilities, you'll be improving services that are core to Ordnance Survey's future and fundamental to GB as a whole.

About the role

We're looking for a talented Engineer who is passionate about using their software development and coding skills to increase the resilience, reliability and quality of customer-focused web services hosted in Azure. You'll work collaboratively within an established team to apply DevSecOps/SRE principles to enhance both the services themselves and the capability of the wider team.

The role will involve daily contact with Engineers & other stakeholders working within an Agile framework. Your focus will be on proactive service improvement as opposed to reactive support, but this will need to dovetail with potentially conflicting development releases; effective communication skills and team working is essential. You will bring strong knowledge of both software development and operational processes with experience of applying these to high-availability web services within a cloud environment.

Here is a snapshot of the technologies that we use

  • Azure (DevOps, Pipelines, AppServices, Function Apps, ARM/Bicep templates, B2C, etc.)
  • Java/.Net/C#
  • Git, YAML
  • PostgreSQL (including PostGIS spatial extensions) & NoSQL (CosmosDB) databases
  • Node.js / React.js
  • Azure/APIgee API management
  • PowerBI
  • ESRI ArcGIS, FME, etc.

What we're looking for

You will need to demonstrate your track record against the following essential criteria:

  • Genuine passion for continually improving the reliability and stability of operational services
  • Supporting and maintaining complex, cloud-based web services working within an Agile framework
  • Solid understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and software engineering best practices
  • Previous experience in cloud technologies and best practice - ideally Azure
  • A track record of continually identifying and implementing service improvements or observability
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring other team members and providing consultancy to other teams

This role is full time 37 hours, however, part time applicants looking for a minimum of 30 hours over 4 days will be considered.
