Our client, a high-technology security detection business operating in both the UK and the US, is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their team. This permanent role involves taking responsibility for all mechanical design activities within the company, reporting to the Systems Engineering Lead. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, development, and testing of both new and existing products through their entire life cycle, ensuring they meet client needs both in the UK and US.
Key Responsibilities:- Own the mechanical design process for all products, ensuring adherence to standard guidelines and policies.
- Serve as the design authority for designing components for radiation detection systems based on product and customer requirements.
- Utilise CAD software (SolidWorks) to create and modify parts for CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal bending, and 3D printing.
- Lead the team in building models and prototypes to validate and test designs.
- Provide lean solutions to challenges in product development and oversee their implementation.
- Participate in peer design reviews to ensure best practices are followed.
- Support the team in producing specifications for raw materials and components used in production.
- Collaborate with electrical engineering, software engineering, and other departments to ensure product functionality meets customer requirements.
- Manage relationships with external experts for specific design issues as needed.
- Mentor and supervise direct reports, providing guidance to maximise performance.
- Act as a key ambassador for the business, maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.
- Experience in mechanical engineering with a focus on design and development.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks design suite.
- Knowledge of SW FEA package.
- Ability to produce engineering solutions meeting various environmental requirements.
- Familiarity with manufacturing techniques such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, and plastic moulding.
- Knowledge of material properties suited to different operational fields and climates.
- Strong drafting and geometric tolerance practices.
- Understanding of documentation control procedures and engineering change management.
- Experience with BOM construction.
- Strong problem-solving skills and methodologies.
- Confidence and resilience in dealing with challenges from stakeholders.
