Transport Planner - Ports Logistics (Dock Experience Required)

Job Overview:

Our client, a leading logistics company specialising in port operations, is seeking an experienced Transport Planner with specific experience in dockside logistics. You will play a critical role in the planning and coordination of vehicle movements in and out of the port, ensuring efficient transport operations while maintaining high standards of safety and compliance. This is a dynamic and fast-paced role, ideal for someone with excellent organisational skills and experience in a busy port environment.

Key Responsibilities:

- Plan and schedule the efficient movement of vehicles and loads between the port and onward destinations, ensuring on-time delivery and collection.

- Coordinate with dock and warehouse teams to ensure smooth loading and unloading of goods, optimising vehicle turnaround times.

- Liaise with port authorities, hauliers, and external partners to manage vehicle entry and exit from the docks.

- Create and manage daily and weekly transport plans, adapting quickly to last-minute changes or disruptions.

- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and company policies, including driver hours, tachograph regulations, and road safety standards.

- Monitor and manage vehicle and driver availability, allocating resources effectively to meet operational requirements.

- Use transport management systems (TMS) to plan routes and track shipments, ensuring accurate data entry and reporting.

- Address and resolve any logistical issues or delays promptly, coordinating with the appropriate teams to mitigate impact.

- Communicate with drivers to ensure they are fully briefed on routes, safety protocols, and customer requirements.

- Assist in the management of import/export paperwork and ensure all customs and port documentation is accurate and compliant.

- Continuously review operational processes to identify opportunities for cost-saving and efficiency improvements.

Skills & Qualifications Required:

- Previous experience in a transport planning role within a port or dock environment is essential.

- Strong knowledge of port operations and understanding of the logistical challenges within a dock setting.

- Proficiency with transport management systems (TMS) and other relevant software for planning and route optimisation.

- Strong organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage changing priorities.

- Familiarity with UK and European road transport legislation, including driver hours, working time directives, and compliance.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to liaise effectively with drivers, dock staff, and external partners.

- Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to think on your feet and resolve operational issues quickly.

- A team player with a proactive approach to improving efficiency and performance in transport operations.

Preferred:

- Experience working with customs clearance and managing import/export paperwork within a port environment.

- Knowledge of fleet management and vehicle maintenance requirements.

- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant transport management software.
