Service Care Legal are currently recruiting for a Senior Lead (Democratic Services, Civic and Elections) for a local authority in the Essex region. You will be instrumental in leading and managing the Democratic Services, Civic, and Elections teams. Reporting to the Director of Law and Governance, you will ensure the smooth operation of the Council's democratic functions, support civic duties, and uphold the integrity of electoral processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage teams dedicated to the democratic function of the Council, ensuring effective operation and compliance with governance frameworks.
  • Maintain governance standards and support decision-making processes for the Council, Cabinet, and Committees.
  • Oversee the delivery of services related to electoral registration and conduct of elections in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with fellow managers to align departmental objectives with the Council's strategic vision and priorities.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with elected members, external partners, and community stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
  • Lead initiatives for continual improvement in democratic processes and civic engagement.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven management experience within democratic services, demonstrating a clear understanding of local government structures, political frameworks, and electoral law.
  • In-depth knowledge of committee administration, civic duties, and the legislative environment influencing these functions.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the capacity to guide and advise both councillors and officers on complex decision-making processes.
  • Experience in leading teams, managing performance, and fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in response to change.
