Financial Controller - Mid Cornwall - £50,000

Trial Balance Consulting are delighted to have formed an exclusive recruitment partnership with a long established and highly successful retail services business based in mid Cornwall. The company have engaged us to source their next Financial Controller, an interesting and broad role which will essentially see the successful candidate assuming a finance-number-one position within a fast growing and financially secure business. The role is offered as a full time, permanent contract with potential for an element of hybrid working where required.

With a current turnover exceeding £5M and helmed by a very experienced management team, the role works within an impressive and profitable luxury marketplace where returning customer numbers are high. The incoming Financial Cornwall will inherit an established function but will also benefit from a "blankcanvas", essentially free to redesign, develop and stream the financial operations where appropriate (particularly digital accounting systems). Reporting to and working closely alongside a high experienced CEO, and managing a team of three direct reports, the role would be particularly well suited to either an experienced FC or perhaps a Finance Manager seeking to step up. Key responsibilities to include:

- Assume overall management for all aspect of the company’s operational financial controls whilst adding strategic input at board level

- Manage, mentor and develop an ambitious team of transactional-focussed colleagues

- Preparation and presentation of quality management accounts with accompanying commentary

- Develop budget and forecasting packs

- Look to develop and streamline all digital accounting processes and bespoke CRM systems

- Collate income stream reports from multiple business entities

- Preparation of statutory accounts in line with UK standards

- Work closely with a range of external stakeholders including Chartered Accountants, Auditors and external investors

- Maintain the fixed Asset register

- VAT and tax reporting, and filing

- Monitor and authorise supplier payment runs

- Overseeing internal payroll procedures

We’re looking for an ambitious FC that possesses A1 technical experience as well sound commercial judgement. You’ll be taking a lead role in ensuring the efficient financial controls of a very busy function with multiple income stream and we’re looking for a candidate that feels as comfortable with management reporting as they do statutory accounting, leading audits, budgeting, forecasting and benchmarking. A professionally qualified individual (ACA/ACCA/CIMA), and/or AAT qualified with significant vocational experience, you’ll need a solid background in the preparation of financial and management reports, up to date knowledge of accounting standards and budgetary controls. Our client is open minded where sector experience is concerned, but the role would be particularly well suited to an applicant with B2C retail exposure. You’ll be a natural leader with past experience in managing your own team, developing their skills and mentoring their progress. Your skills in identifying potential improvements and leading finance projects will be demonstrable and your experience of using technology in previous roles will be obvious. Most importantly, you’ll possess the ability to recognise the values and cultures of a growing business and hit the ground running within a friendly and likeminded team environment.
