We are currently working with a Local Authority based in North Staffordshire who are recruiting for a Senior Planning Officerto support the Development Management Manager and provide leadership on the supervision and direction of Planning Officers. 

Senior Planning OfficerStart Date: ASAPDuration: 3 Months Initially (likely extension)Rate: £40-£45 p/h (Inside IR35 umbrella)Hybrid Working Arrangement: North Staffordshire

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, ensuring high work standards, process compliance, and addressing performance issues promptly
  • Oversee team operations, conduct 1-2-1s and appraisals, and respond to performance insights to drive continuous improvement
  • Determine planning applications under delegated powers, and support Planning Officers with complex casework
  • Handle planning applications, enforcement matters, and appeals, including preparing and presenting reports to Committees and serving as an expert witness at Public Inquiries and Hearings
  • Collaborate with enforcement officers on breaches of planning control, processing related applications, and appeals
  • Prepare development briefs, Supplementary Planning Documents, and other critical planning documentation
  • Offer strategic and operational advice to senior officers and Members, particularly on high-profile or sensitive issues
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders

Requirements:

  • Demonstrable expertise in planning regulations and processes
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in team management and operational oversight
  • Proven ability to handle complex planning cases, including applications, enforcement, and appeals
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement
