Job Title: Large Shovel Driver
Shift: Temporary Monday - Friday Nights (17.00-04.00)
Pay: £14 per hour
Job Purpose
As a Large Shovel Driver, you will be responsible for operating heavy machinery to ensure the efficient handling of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) and waste reception materials. You will play a crucial role in maintaining plant efficiency, ensuring material quality, and upholding health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
SRF Shovel Operations
Maintain SRF Conveyor: Ensure the SRF shredder discharge conveyor remains clear of material at all times.
Prevent Contamination: Keep SRF products free from contamination and ensure the correct SRF is loaded onto the appropriate lorry.
Material Segregation: Ensure two types of SRF products remain separate at all times.
Trailer Inspections: Inspect trailers before loading for cleanliness, complete associated paperwork, and inspect again after loading to ensure they are cleared of loose debris before dispatch.
Waste Reception Shovel Operations
Material Feeding: Ensure consistent and uniform feeding of materials into the 360 Material Handler to maximize shredder efficiency.
Quality Control: Identify and remove large, bulky, or potentially damaging items before they enter the shredder.
Tipping Hall Management: Keep the tipping hall clear by heaping up feedstock efficiently.
Optimize Tipping Efficiency: Keep waste at the rear of discharging lorries at an optimal level for fast and efficient tipping.
Waste Monitoring: Identify problematic waste deliveries based on suitability, composition, and nature.
Shovel Driver Duties
Equipment Maintenance:
Complete daily mobile plant maintenance check sheets for large shovels.
Conduct regular checks of the shovel and bucket for contamination.
Ensure SRF grades remain separate within their respective bays.
Operational Efficiency:
Communicate with the weighbridge operator to ensure correct SRF grades are loaded.
Monitor concrete walls for damage that could contaminate SRF.
Ensure suitable cover is arranged when taking breaks.
End-of-Shift Responsibilities:
Leave the machine in a clean and operational condition for the next shift, including:
Refueling (Diesel)
Checking Engine/Hydraulic Oils & AdBlue
Fully greasing the machine
Blowing out engine filters, radiator, and cab for cleanliness
Additional Responsibilities
Multi-Skilled Operations:
If certified, operate other plant equipment as required.
Undertake additional duties when mobile plant is not in operation.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience operating large shovels or heavy plant machinery (essential)
Valid plant operation certification (e.g., CPCS, NPORS) (preferred)
Knowledge of SRF/waste handling processes
Understanding of health and safety in an industrial setting
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment
Strong teamwork and communication skills
