About the SME Portfolio Manager Role:

A rapidly growing and dynamic firm in Hertfordshire is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented individual to join their Advice, Audit & Accounts team as an SME Portfolio Manager. This role is perfect for a confident and organised professional who thrives in a client-facing environment and is looking to make a real impact in a supportive and growth-driven team.

As an SME Portfolio Manager, you will have the opportunity to manage your own portfolio of clients, which includes a diverse range of businesses such as manufacturers, IT developers, professional services firms, property investors, hospitality businesses, and not-for-profit entities. Your role will involve both strategic and hands-on client management, as well as mentoring junior staff. With a focus on building long-term client relationships, you will help clients navigate key financial and compliance matters while ensuring the highest quality of service.

Key Responsibilities as an SME Portfolio Manager:

  • Manage your own portfolio, overseeing client relationships and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality work.
  • Maintain efficient staff planning, WIP management, and billing for your portfolio.
  • Develop and nurture client relationships, helping to identify and secure new business opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with current legislation and standards, while maintaining proactive awareness of industry changes.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for client's compliance queries, ensuring exceptional service and guidance.
  • Delegate work to team members, providing mentorship and feedback on performance and quality.
  • Participate in business development activities, attending networking events and pitching for new work.
  • Stay current with cloud-based accounting technologies and systems to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
  • Present completed files for partner review and ensure accuracy before submission.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise for the SME Portfolio Manager:

  • ACA/ACCA qualified with a solid understanding of corporate and personal taxes.
  • Previous experience managing a portfolio of clients, ideally in an SME-focused environment.
  • Strong communicator, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with clients and team members.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • A commercial mindset with experience in fee development and client development.
  • Proactive, with a focus on delivering excellent client service and mentoring junior team members.
