Job Overview:
We are currently recruiting for a highly skilled and experienced Contract Principal Highways Engineer to join our client's team based at their head office in Stockport. This exciting opportunity is ideal for engineers who are nearing or have achieved Chartered/ Incorporated status and are passionate about delivering high-quality design solutions for a variety of exciting projects.
As a Principal Highways Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive highway design services, providing technical guidance to junior staff, and ensuring the smooth execution of projects. If you have over 10 years of practical experience in highway design and are looking to work on diverse and challenging projects, we would love to hear from you!


Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of feasibility studies, designs, scheme drawings, and calculations.
  • Preparation of contract documents and technical specifications.
  • Planning, managing, and monitoring projects from inception to completion.
  • Regular liaison with clients, contractors, and key stakeholders.
  • Ensuring designs meet current standards, including DMRB, LTN1/20, and other relevant design guidelines.
  • Utilising design software such as Civils 3D and/or MX (desirable).
  • Delivering consistent, high-quality technical design services.
  • Providing training and support to other team members.
  • Effective communication and client liaison to ensure project success.
  • Reporting to the Highways Director and working alongside other discipline team leaders to ensure technical integration.
  • Taking responsibility for financial and commercial aspects of projects.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or nearing Chartered status).
  • At least 10 years of experience in highway design, preferably with Local Authorities.
  • Strong technical knowledge of current highways design standards, including DMRB, LTN1/20, and other relevant guidelines.
  • Proven experience with Civils 3D and/or MX design software is highly desirable.
  • Strong project management and client communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Experience in financial and commercial management of projects.
