About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Planning Officer to lead on major projects within a Local Authority based in Stoke. This is a dynamic role where you will provide expert advice and critically assess complex applications, ensuring compliance with planning legislation and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice on planning law, policy, and guidance, ensuring alignment with Council objectives and best practices.
  • Critically evaluate and recommend decisions on complex major planning applications, including those related to: Listed buildings, conservation areas, tree preservation orders, and advertisements; Hazardous substances and other associated legislation.
  • Support initiatives such as CPOs, LDOs, and Enterprise Zones.
  • Deliver professional planning input for sustainable regeneration projects, aligning with corporate priorities.
  • Advise senior Council officers on development management considerations for major investment and redevelopment opportunities.
  • Collaborate with significant landowners, businesses, and developers (e.g., universities, NHS trusts, and key businesses) to help realize their development goals.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Proven experience in assessing or preparing planning applications, including larger and more complex development schemes.
  • Strong understanding of the relationship between development management, enforcement, planning policy, and other material considerations.
  • Specialist expertise in handling complex development proposals, including policy and design aspects.
  • Good commercial awareness, with an understanding of the motivations, opportunities, and constraints affecting businesses, developers, and their agents.
