We're looking for a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND provision in Stoke on Trent. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with students who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and other learning difficulties.

What will you be doing?
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you'll be providing vital support to students, helping them engage with their lessons and develop essential life skills. You'll be:

  • Supporting Students One-on-One or in Small Groups - Helping with subjects like English, Maths, and Functional Skills.
  • Managing Behaviour & Emotions - Using de-escalation strategies, positive reinforcement, and restorative techniques to help students manage their emotions and behaviour.
  • Adapting Learning Materials - Tailoring lessons to meet individual needs and learning styles.
  • Building Social and Emotional Skills - Encouraging resilience, confidence, and self-regulation in your students.
  • Collaborating with Teachers and SENCOs - Working together to implement individual plans and provide the best support for each student.

Who are we looking for?

  • Someone who is passionate about working with students who have SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, or other behavioural challenges.
  • Someone with great communication and interpersonal skills - being able to connect with both students and staff is key.
  • Patience, resilience, and empathy - we need someone who is understanding and proactive in their approach.
  • Experience with behaviour management or child development is a bonus (training will be provided).
  • You'll also need to have or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS Certificate.

A Day in the Life
Your day will start with a quick briefing where you'll discuss the needs of the students you're working with. Then, you'll jump into your role, providing academic and emotional support throughout the day, using visual aids, sensory tools, and structured routines to help the students engage with their learning. At the end of the day, you'll join in on collaborative planning and review the progress of your students.
