Key Responsibilities - SEMH Teaching Assistant
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide tailored support to students with additional needs, helping them to engage in learning and develop essential life skills. Your key duties will include:
- One-to-One and Small Group Support - Assisting students with core subjects, including English, Maths, and Functional Skills
- Behaviour Management and Emotional Regulation - Implementing de-escalation strategies, restorative approaches, and positive reinforcement techniques
- Differentiated Learning Support - Adapting teaching materials and activities to meet individual student needs
- Developing Social and Emotional Skills - Encouraging resilience, confidence, and self-regulation in students
- Safeguarding and Student Welfare - Ensuring students are safe, supported, and protected in line with safeguarding policies
- Collaboration with Teachers and SENCOs - Assisting in the development and implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Passionate about supporting young people with SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and behavioural challenges
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and staff
- Understanding of child development, behaviour management, and trauma-informed practices (training provided)
- Patient, resilient, and empathetic, with a positive and proactive approach
- Ability to use adaptive teaching techniques and structured interventions to support student progress
- Hold (or be willing to obtain) an Enhanced DBS Certificate
A Typical Day as an SEMH Teaching Assistant
Your day will start with a briefing session, where you will review student needs, lesson plans, and intervention strategies. Throughout the day, you will provide academic, emotional, and behavioural support, using structured routines, visual aids, and sensory learning techniques. You will help students engage in learning, manage emotions, and develop independence. The day will conclude with collaborative planning, reviewing student progress, and preparing for the next day's interventions.
