Rate: Up to 450 per day



Role Purpose


The Section Engineer will manage a specific section of the works, providing leadership and technical expertise to a team of Site Engineers. The role involves ensuring all site activities align with health, safety, and environmental standards, and overseeing the engineering control, quality, productivity, and commercial aspects of the assigned section.



Key Responsibilities



Core Responsibilities

  • Health & Safety: Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm, actively contributing to a safe working environment.
  • Sustainability: Support sustainability initiatives in line with company goals.
  • Team Leadership: Motivate and manage performance of team members, ensuring competency is maintained through training and coaching.


Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

  • Method Statements & Risk Assessments: Review and improve risk assessments and method statements where necessary.
  • Field Audits: Conduct regular audits to confirm the adequacy of control documentation.
  • Permits to Work: Oversee production and implementation of permits to work, including Permits to Dig.
  • Temporary Works: Manage the planning and implementation of temporary works to ensure timely completion.


Engineering Control

  • Setting Out & Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance and coaching to Site Engineers on setting out techniques and construction challenges.
  • Construction Issue Resolution: Apply best practices and industry standards to resolve construction issues efficiently.


Quality

  • Handover Documentation: Lead the preparation and submission of required handover documentation.
  • Process Implementation: Implement systems to ensure works are carried out according to specifications (e.g., material approvals, non-conformance reporting).
  • Audits & Inspections: Conduct independent inspections and site audits to ensure compliance.
  • Team Development: Mentor less experienced staff, fostering growth and skill development.


Productivity

  • Programme Management: Produce and maintain a fully resourced stage programme using appropriate software.
  • KPI Monitoring: Track and monitor KPI compliance, recommending improvements where necessary.
  • Cross-functional Coordination: Ensure alignment between section programme and weekly operational plans.


Commercial

  • Diary & Records: Maintain an accurate diary of site activities, including engagement with external organisations such as subcontractors.
  • Cost Monitoring: Review and monitor weekly costs to ensure budgetary compliance.
  • Subcontractor Management: Lead the procurement and management of subcontractors.
  • Contract Correspondence: Draft communications to subcontractors, suppliers, and clients as needed.


Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Health & Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with safe systems of work, method statements, risk assessments, and accident/incident investigation processes.
  • Engineering Expertise: Strong technical knowledge of setting out techniques, construction processes, and temporary works.
  • Team Leadership: Proven ability to manage and develop teams, encouraging ownership of tasks and clear communication of outcomes.
  • Flexibility & Work Ethic: Willingness to work unsociable hours or nights if required, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment to team goals.
  • Driving License: Must hold a current UK driving license and a valid CSCS card.
  • Certification: SSSTS or SMSTS qualified.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Problem Solving: Solution-oriented approach to issue resolution, with independent judgement in decision-making.


HSE Expertise:

  • Risk Assessments & Method Statements: Able to develop safe systems of work and lead incident investigations.
  • Legislation Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of current health & safety regulations.


Engineering Control:

  • Resource Allocation: Ensure adequate resource levels for works, addressing any additional requirements promptly.
  • Technical Guidance: Ability to coach junior engineers in technical skills and issue resolution.


Quality:

  • Business Management Systems: Thorough understanding of business management systems and the importance of compliance with handover requirements.


Productivity:

  • Programme Planning: Skilled in producing stage programmes and tracking KPI performance for construction activities, particularly in earthworks, drainage, pavement, communications, structures, and roadworks.


Commercial:

  • Procurement Experience: Assist in procurement processes for newly instructed works.
  • Cost and Value Understanding: Ability to monitor and manage costs effectively.


Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrates strong leadership capabilities, with the ability to make independent decisions.
  • Professional Accreditation: Achieved or working towards professional accreditation (e.g., ICE, IHT).
