A career in insurance is more than you might think - it’s a dynamic and impactful field that’s all about putting the customer first. With a reputation built on trust and loyalty - proven by our enviable 94-96% customer renewal rate each year - our graduate scheme is your chance to gain a broad range of skills, build your insurance expertise, and play a key role in our ongoing success.

This advert covers two schemes: Claims and Underwriting. You’ll be assessed for both as part of the process, but if you have a specific preference, just get in touch to let us know after applying.

Our Underwriting teams assess and manage our insurance risks, helping us offer competitive, bespoke products that hit both our business goals and customer needs. Our Claims teams focus on how we show up for our customers when it matters most - handling complex cases and ensuring we deliver a top-notch service.

What you can expect

Both schemes give you a hands-on introduction to the insurance world, rotating through different teams to give you a complete understanding of the function and our products. You’ll also collaborate with regional teams, external suppliers, and our agency distribution network, giving you insight into the full end-to-end process.

Along the way, you’ll also get to know more about our operational functions that keep claims and underwriting running smoothly - from process automation and systems to complaints handling and resource planning. This exposure will give you a deeper understanding of how everything fits together behind the scenes.

Here’s what you can expect to develop:

  • Technical Skills - whether it’s managing complex underwriting cases or claims, spotting insurance fraud, or diving into best practices, you’ll be contributing to shaping strategies that make a real difference.
  • MI & Analytics - dive into data and gather insights that influence strategy.
  • Change Management - lead and manage projects that improve processes, boost efficiency, and enhance the customer experience.

In your final year, you’ll create a strategic business plan, putting your skills into action while honing your commercial awareness and strategic thinking to grow your leadership potential.

Your future

These schemes can open doors to a wide range of roles across the business, and we’ll work with you to explore your options and help you to identify the path that’s right for you. Throughout the scheme, you’ll strengthen your core insurance skills, earn CII qualifications, and develop essential competencies to set you up for a successful career. You'll be fully supported along the way, with a dedicated buddy and mentor, plus a strong network of current and former graduates. As you near the end of the scheme, a careers coach will be there to guide you in planning your next steps.

It’s not all about work either. We encourage our graduates to get involved in extracurricular activities, from volunteering and organising charity or social events to representing NFU Mutual at industry events, all in line with our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.

Application process

If your application is shortlisted, you’ll be invited to complete an online assessment designed to measure your potential for success, such as your ability to learn and solve problems. The following stage is a short video interview, and the final stage will be an in-person assessment centre, where you’ll participate in a variety of activities, including a group exercise, a role-specific exercise, and a skills-based interview. These will be taking place end of November / early December.

This vacancy may close early depending on application volumes, so we recommend getting your application in as soon as possible!

  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Digital literacy skills
